Breaking away from the pack

With M13 only a few weeks away, a few of us have been talking about a few deck ideas.

The established decks will get a boost from the new cards, for example Delver will get a new creature in the form of Void Stalker.

Void Stalker

And Red / Green Agrgro or Naya will get a new creature in the form of Thragtusk.

Thragtusk

But what about a new deck? What about a deck that will use a new color that will be coming back up to a power level that was only whispered about by planes walkers in the back corners of the room, after they had dropped from every tournament in the last few years?

Now I can talk about mono-black control, but I’ll leave that to other brewers, low fruit will always be there. I’m thinking about another deck idea.  With the spoiler of Hellion Cruciable all I could see was a land that could create multiple creatures that can’t be counters.

The only problem with this is unlike entreat the angels where it’s almost a insta win, this bad boy needs a little TLC before you reap the benefits. What the best way to get the fruits of your labour? How about controlling the board until you are ready?

After talking about this concept with a few brewers, I think it maybe time to spring RB control to the masses. Using powerful spells like mutilate and black sun zenith to keep the board clear and using cards like Murder, Go for the throat and Doomblade for spot removal. You have mini sweepers like Whipflare or Slagstorm to clean up weenies.

What about a more permanent solution? I’m thinking about Curse of Deaths hold to make the board a veritable no man lands. (Hmmmm sounds like a great name for the deck) Then to finish it off Red Sun Zenith to destroy pesky undying creatures and to use as an alternative win condition.

What about creatures? Looking at the spoiler list a few jumped out at me, Lilliana’s shade will fit in well to build mana and a pump able threat for your opponent to worry about. The one creature I’m excited about is the reprint of Shimian Specter, If you are making a ‘No mans land’ then you will have a better chance to connect with this baby and start whittling out the pesky planeswalkers and enchantments you may have problems dealing with later on in the game.

Remember this is a control deck and not a tempo deck, your in it for the long game and not a quick four turn kill.

With that small gem of wisdom I will get the list uploaded and ready for you all to look at and comment on, the more people that look at it the best it is to refine and make sure Im on the right track.

Deck list will be up soon.

Thanks for reading

  1. Nice idea, and ill keep an eye out for a decklist. I think there might be a little confusion though, since you wrote “a land that could create multiple creatures”, but the Crucible requires sacrificing in order to make a Hellion. Either ive misunderstood something (its quite possible), or this could be a thorn in your plan…

    • Thank you for the feedback, you could be very right! I tweeted Chris Lansdale from JudgecastNorth fame and he seems to think the same, which is fine, having a creature that cant be countered is still a powerful thing.

Getting only one Hellion with Haste (important to remember) will put your opponent on a five turn clock, or closer to burn range for the win.

  2. Great ideas so far, but if you play control, I would consider testing liliana of the dark realms instead of liliana’s shade in the 4cc slot. she gets mana too, in an emergency case does spot removal and if you are able to get the emblem finish your opponent with red sun’s zenith and huge amounts of black mana :)
    keep up the work man.

    Best Regards
    Andy

    • Thanks for the comments and the great ideas! Ill defo look at Lillian of the Dark Realms, she wont be subject to easy creature removal and will be a great asset. Thanks again!

  3. Dude, I am really curious with what list you will come up with. another thing I would recommend is bonfire of the damned. this card is just awesome in late game, especially when the miracle ability triggers. In my opinion it is better than slagstorm, because it only sweeps his board AND deals damage to him. I guess against weenie decks you should have 1 or 2 slagstorm chillin in your sb, because it is most likely faster than bonfire because if you have it on your opening hand it is more or less a dead card until turn 6 or so and by then weenie hast most likely won against you. and, as a badass finisher I would play a set of obliterators and/or thundermaw hellkites because they are simply nuts. I will take my time tonight and come up with a decklist as well and share it here, and I am also open to your suggestions. take care man.

  4. hello there,
after intense testing with a friend of mine, I came to several interesting results. First, I found hellion crucible to be disturbing more often than actually helpful. Another thing about that land is that it screwes up your mana base too much. in this deck you are playing many spells which need RR or BB to cast, and there a land that produces colorless mana doesn’t help much. I found myself wanting a swamp or mountain whenever I drew a crucible, or maybe I just had the wrong matchups ( could be…) I didn’t even test curse of death’s hold, because I simply think it is too slow, but that could be just my opinion. Here is my list I am currently running, but it isn’t perfect as well I guess. really good cards were liliana, I got out the emblem several times and whooped my opponents ass with bonfire for 22 or so :) And Sign in Blood is simply needed as a 4-off because you need somekind of card advantage in a control based deck. I would be glad to hear your opinion and improvement suggestions.
    here you go:

    Creature:
    2x Inferno Titan
    3x Olivia Voldaren
    3x Thundermaw Hellkite
    1x Wurmcoil Engine

    Instant:
    1x Brimstone Volley
    2x Dismember
    1x Doom Blade
    3x Go for the Throat

    Planeswalker:
4x Liliana of the Dark Realms

    Sorcery:
    4x Black Sun’s Zenith
    4x Bonfire of the Damned
    3x Duress
    1x Killing Wave
    4x Sign in Blood

    Land:
    4x Blackcleave Cliffs
    4x Dragonskull Summit
    4x Mountain
    1x Stensia Bloodhall/Hellion Crucible (okay as a 1-off)
    11x Swamp

    Take care ;)

    • Nice work Andy!

The list is very strong, and will be testing it soon, I played a few games with my list and like you found the Hellion Cruciable not exciting, one of is ok, but after that, it was not sexy at all.

Control is the basis of the deck and it did that, but there were times I was looking for an answer where in a tuned control deck you have the answers all the time.

I don’t know about everyone else but I found a lack of 1/1 token around in my meta, I don’t know if it’s because it’s a new format and everyone wants to play with the toys or it has just shifted away from that game plan. So curse of deaths hold are taking a break.

Back to your list, I have a feeling there might be one to many Hellkites? I would love to hear your thoughts on it. Adding another wurmcoil would be amnice lifegain/beatdown addition. Bonfires are a BOMB (why did they print that card!) so to miracle them up is a plus, Lilliana is great but I have a feeling three would be a good number and you won’t have so many sitting in your hand.

Thanks again for your comments and deck list!
