So, I hate to spoils things right out of the gates, but, there are probably points for honesty… somewhere.
I’m going to be writing about Cube, and sometimes more Cube. It’s what I do.
I’ve been a Magic fan for a long time, from afar, or up close, it came and went. I never really found a format which ever stuck with me. Then, recently I heard the rumblings, and finally paid attention to Cube.
Great idea.
Cube is basically the greatest format.
It can be whatever you want it to be, whenever you need.
My plans for a cube started off as one thing, changed into another thing, then switched over to being something else entirely. This is awesome.
While I went a bit crazy on my mad scientist experiments, you really don’t have to take it to extremes; I think anyone reading this will be able to build a Cube just out of cards that aren’t being used anywhere else. I also think that you should.
It doesn’t have to have all the Cube staples in it to be a Cube, it just needs X amount of cards where X is how many cards you want it to be (Something that you can divide into 45s is the recommendation though).
Building a Cube should be a marathon, not a sprint, it’s worth it to take the time to appreciate how it changes and how poking at it constantly doesn’t mean that it’s helping.
Find some cards that you like (I know they’re out there), choose an arbitrary number of cards in each colour, add artifacts, multi-coloured and lands to taste and you have a Cube, seriously, that’s it.
Convince one person to Winston draft with you then you’ll have more people wanting in. Soon enough you’ll have a pod, where people can draft hilarious and awesome decks for no cost.
My latest project is to build the Newb Cube. I basically need it to meet two goals, one, be useful as a teaching aid, two, something that I’m not worried about leaving lying around.
No rarity restrictions, just trying to build something that is a limited power level, not the constructed/limited mix that Cube usually hits.
Using mainly M13 draft cards has been a very good place to start (even has reminder text) and a couple binder pulls and now I just need to sleeve the thing, then start drafting it to see if I got it right (definitely not).
Anyway, more next time (a promise and a threat).
Much appreciated.
